Gudger first became Senate president pro tem in January 2025 with unanimous support from both parties.

Weaver becomes the first woman to hold the post in Alabama history. She said she will focus on unifying the Republican caucus and advancing GOP-backed legislation.

Election results: With 92 percent of votes in, Republican Ellen Weaver secured 51.5 percent of votes; her Democratic challenger trailed by less than 4 percent.
